Extrusion Process of Making PVC Profiles

What are PVC Profiles?

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) profiles are widely used in construction (e.g., window frames, door frames), furniture, and electrical engineering due to their excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness.

Extrusion Process of Making PVC Profiles:

The extrusion process for making PVC profiles is a continuous, high-volume manufacturing method that transforms raw PVC compound into products with a constant cross-section, like window frames or trim.

1. Raw Material Preparation and Feeding:

Compounding: Rigid PVC resin (powder or granules) is mixed with essential additives like heat stabilizers, lubricants, colorants, and fillers. This blend is crucial for the final product’s performance and color.

Feeding: The prepared compound is loaded into a hopper and fed at a controlled rate into the extruder’s heated barrel.

2. Melting and Mixing (Extruder)

Inside the heated barrel, the rotating screws (usually twin-screws for PVC) move the material forward.

The combination of external heat from the barrel and internal friction (shear heat) from the screws melts the PVC and homogenizes the mixture into a molten, viscous mass. The screw design and temperature control are critical to prevent thermal degradation of the PVC.

3. Forming (Extrusion through the Die)

The molten PVC is forced under high pressure through a custom-designed extrusion die. This die precisely defines the final cross-sectional shape of the profile (e.g., a multi-chamber window profile).

For hollow profiles, a mandrel or pin within the die, sometimes combined with air pressure, maintains the internal cavities.

4. Calibration and Cooling

Immediately after exiting the die, the hot, soft profile is pulled into a calibration and cooling system.

This typically involves a vacuum calibration table or water baths, which cool the PVC gradually while simultaneously using vacuum suction to hold the profile against sizing tools. This step is essential to solidify the profile and ensure it retains its exact dimensions and prevent warping.

5. Haul-Off and Cutting

The haul-off unit (puller belts) grips the cooled, solidified profile and continuously draws it away from the extruder at a precisely controlled speed. This speed is synchronized with the output of the extruder.

Finally, cutting unit (saw or knife) slices the continuous profile into the required, predetermined lengths.
